Jan's journey: from Dutch Army training to four decades of European cars
My love for high-end European cars started back in Holland in my teens, valeting Porsches and Italian sports cars. Mechanics ran in the family—my uncles and a close friend passed down that passion, and I’ve been hooked on cars and motorbikes ever since.
At 20, I completed my compulsory army training and served another three years as a Technical Specialist, getting certified in diesel and petrol mechanics, rebuilding engines, gearboxes, and receiving a decorated award for service and management.
I immigrated to NZ in 1984, working for Lees Brothers in Papakura before taking on so much weekend work I had to branch out on my own. To stay ahead of the game, I returned to Holland in '92 for three years of specialist diagnostic training in European and American workshops.
In 1995, I set up Euro Car Service on Manukau Road in Pukekohe. Buying the right diagnostic scanners early on set us apart in repairing complex European cars. 40 years on, we still take a personal approach with our customers—working on classic and late-model European cars, vans, and campervans. Some clients have been with me right from the start, and I’m proud to keep serving the Franklin community today.
That combination of old-school mechanical knowledge and modern diagnostic capability remains one of the workshop’s greatest strengths today.
